Guidelines
for Selection of Tournament-Bound Teams
1. The Head Coach has the responsibility to select the team. The team should
be selected to best represent the organization and be competitive at their
level.
2. The pool of players from which the team is selected is comprised of all
players who have demonstrated an interest and are legally registered with USA
Hockey. They must also be eligible to play for TGHA under the guidelines
provided by USA Hockey and NYSAHA for player movement.
3. The ability of a player or her family to handle the financial burden of
travel hockey is not a concern in selecting the team. If a player is eligible
and has the desire and skill to play at that level, the financial issues will
be addressed privately and sensitively with the appropriate personnel in TGHA
4. An underage player is defined as one who has opportunity to play in a
lower age bracket (e.g., a 12 year-old can play 12U or 14U, but may wish to
try out for 16U). Subject to the provisions of paragraphs 4 (a) and (b),
below, underage players can participate above their own age level. This
provision is made to allow coaches to select the best team at each level, and
to afford exceptional players the opportunity to accelerate their skill
development.
Coaches are advised not to select underage players who will not receive
regular playing time. "Regular playing time" means
players who are on the first two forward lines or first two defensive pairs.
It is better for an underage player to play regularly at her own level than
to not play at the upper level. Our organization's focus is the development
of players and then, competition. During tryouts, the coaches of all
travel teams shall confer with each other to the extent possible. The needs
of teams at each level should be considered in making team selection
decisions including whether an underage player should be allowed to move up
to older levels.
5. The head coach will determine the number of players to be rostered with USA Hockey. With the emphasis on improving
the organization through player development, it is understood that players
who "make teams" but are not given adequate playing time, fail to
develop. It is better to position that player at a lower level and allow them
to improve. Coaches are encouraged but not bound to take the maximum number
allowable on a roster. This direction is given to provide opportunity for
more players at higher levels of competition. However, a full roster implies
that there is very little difference between the first player and the last
player selected.
6. Individual skill is very important in evaluating players. Other
characteristics that should be recognized when selecting players include:
Physical and Social Maturity - while not a body-checking game, there is a
great amount of allowable body contact. The ability of a player to withstand
the contact with larger and older players must be taken into account. The age
ranges for girls teams are often wider than for boys' hockey, so it is
important to look at the level the girls are at socially and emotionally and
determine if there will be a good fit. Cooperation and team play - Make sure
the girls selected will get along with coaches and teammates, and that they
can take constructive criticism and grow from it. Evaluate the understanding
of the flow of the game and the player's ability to anticipate in game
situations.
7. Coaches may, at their discretion at any time within the regulations of USA
Hockey and NYSAHA, add or delete a player from the roster. The coach will
determine if a tryout for a player is required. All players must be
registered with USA Hockey before going on the ice for a tryout or practice.
8. Players who have been on a team in a prior season are not guaranteed a
spot on that team for the coming season. Players who have participated in
other organizations are given the same opportunity as players who have
"come up through the ranks" in TGHA.
