Boys and girls ages 4-19 can sign up to play ice hockey on Sunday, September 14 at Hockey Registration Day, 10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., at The RINK, 1767 E. Shore Drive (Rt. 34N).  TGHA (Tompkins Girls Hockey Association) and IYHA (Ithaca Youth Hockey Association) will have information about their 2008-09 season programs which run from October through March.

Each association offers lessons for beginning skaters and hockey players as well as development and competition opportunities for girls and boys who know how to play the sport.  Coaches are certified upon completion of training offered through USA Hockey. Equipment loans and scholarship information are available.

IYHA will be offering beginners the program called Initiation, and youth who have completed Initiation can play Mite House, Squirt Travel, Squirt Snowbelt, Peewee Travel, Peewee Snowbelt, Bantam Travel, Bantam Snowbelt , and Midget Snowbelt .

TGHA is making arrangements for girls travel team formation sessions 19U, 16U, 14U and 12U Ithaca Shooting Stars teams; and for Initiation, House, and Recreation programs that begin in October.

IYHA and TGHA  have partnered to offer a special event for prospective hockey players on Sundays Oct. 12 and Oct. 26, 9:00 a.m., at The RINK."Take a Shot at Hockey" is a free opportunity for girls and boys ages 4 and up to discover the 'coolest sport around' in a safe and fun environment.

All participants will get to wear some hockey equipment; helmets and gloves will be required of everyone when on the ice. They can bring their own equipment if they have access to some, or borrow IYHA and TGHA's loaner equipment for the event. Hockey skate rentals will be free, too. Participants are encouraged to arrive around 8:30 am. in order to get into equipment.

Coaches from both IYHA and TGHA will be on hand to lead on-ice activities and to answer questions about the programs which begin in late October.  Current players will also greet newcomers.

Spread the Word; Attached Flier

The information above can be cut and pasted and sent to your friends or neighbors who may be considering starting (or re-starting) the sports of ice hockey this year.   It will also be in the media in the coming week(s).

Attached is a flier that will be distributed to elementary schools through Tompkins County next week.  You can download and print copies to put on bulletin boards where you are during the day or night, or where your children are.

7. Payment for season fees will be collected at the time of registration or team formation.  See fee information below. Make checks payable to TGHA.  We are unable to process credit card payments.

Full fees are payable in 1 check or 2 checks, each for ½ the season fee amount, at the time of registration/team formation, the first check with the current date and the second check dated no later than Dec. 31, 2008.  The travel team formation fee is also due at the time of team formation.

Participants applying for financial aid must do so prior to or at Registration or Team Formation, and will pay half of the program fee at the time of registration or team formation (in one or two checks as noted above), with the balance due after financial aid distribution is determined.

Financial aid is available. TGHA has a small financial aid fund to assist families with demonstrated financial need.  You may qualify based on either a) household income or b) other circumstance that pose a financial hardship, such as loss of job.  In order to distribute these resources appropriately, applicants must provide a completed TGHA financial aid application to the TGHA Registrar prior to or at registration or travel team formation.  Financial aid funds are limited.  We will meet as much need as possible but individual awards are never more than 50% of the season’s registration fee and are based on family income, circumstance of financial hardship, and available financial aid funds.  See the application for additional information.  Please contact the TGHA Registrar, Cathy Long, at cel3@cornell.edu, or 607-257-4005 with questions.
