Planning for 2009-10 Season

Another TGHA Update will be released this weekend about coaches for 2009-10 season,
and about how team formation will begin soon for next year.

Spaces in Women's Spring Hockey

Girls 14 and up can play in the women's spring hockey program.  There is a need for
more Wednesday evening players and for substitute players.  Contact Myra Hubbell at
mhubbell@hotmail.com and Karen Bennett at broganbennett@yahoo.com.

TGHA Summer Hockey will be announced soon. Ithaca Hockey Academy is a coed option
for all age levels since checking is not part of the instruction or the scrimmages.
Check out the RINK's web site for skate and shoot and free skating, too.

Syracuse Stars 16Us have advanced to the quarterfinals of the USA Hockey National
Tournament in Rochester.  Follow the action at www.usahockey.com.  Good luck to
Nitsan, Melissa and Annabelle.

In addition, the USA Women's Hockey team is playing in the World Championship
Tournament in Finland.  Their first game is April 4 vs. Japan.  Again
www.usahockey.com is your source.

IHS Hockey Update

The current proposal from the Athletic Department to the Board of Education calls
for reduction of expenses for the team, but not for elimination
..  The budget will be adopted April 21 but in the meantime there are meetings about
all aspects of the district income and expenses for next year.  Tuesday April 7's
meeting at 7:00 p.m. in the IHS Cafeteria will include discussion of Athletics;
players and parents are encouraged to attend and show support for the entire
athletics program.

Banquet Wrap up

The annual TGHA end of year celebration included almost 200 players, parents,
coaches and sponsors gathered for pizza, fruit and green salads, and Purity ice
cream at the Boynton Middle School.  The food, socializing, decorations, door
prizes, presentations and awards were all memorable; thanks to all the volunteers
who worked to make it such a success. It was wonderful to see how many of the
younger set as well as the olders were interested in everything that
transpired--many good listeners!

Board members were recognized as were coaches and sponsors. Each coach brought his
or her team to the front and talked about their season.  Dave and Mary honored the
following with Golden Puck awards for 0809.

Beth Mannion: Beth is graduating from Cornell but we don’t want her to leave….she
was an assistant coach with Initiation last season and then helped with our summer
program before taking on head coach of Initiation this season.  Her smiling face and
her beautiful skating were treats for all who were part of this year’s Initiation
program.

Wayde Whittaker: Is completing two years as=2
0Cub Club coordinator and on the Board. While he needs to hand the reins of Cub Club
to a parent with younger players, we hope he will find more ways to use his
creativity with TGHA—today’s photo show is an example as was his effort to
coordinate Cornell with TGHA to celebrate Hockey Weekend Across America.

Matt Ulinski: Wears many hats for TGHA—last year served as co-president after being
the first VP House before his girls became travel players and after being secretary
and co-registrar, too.  For the association, he is tournament chair (a huge role)
and for 14U he is part of the team leadership…in addition he coached our second
annual Put the Biscuit in the Net program with the Girl Scouts.

Becky Cameron: First known to TGHA as Becky Waddle who played with the 19Us when she
was a new Cornell student, and then as an assistant coach with the 13Us, but as a
newly wed Becky Cameron she increased her involvement as head coach of House and
member of the Board.

Brad Grainger: Not only has he been either a business or personal donor/team sponsor
for a decade or so, he takes work vacation days to do many shifts at time keeping
and score keeping (and sometimes setup and cleanup) for our home tournament...and he
has been on the tournament committee handling the apparel contract for several
years...assisted with Finance Committee and Treasurer transition....taught dozens of
people how to clock and score (counting shots on goal the way they are
supposed to be counted!)...and most of all supported me as well as Erin and Maura
and Allie in our family’s involvement in TGHA over the last 14 seasons.
th the 1
Joel Brock: 14U assistant coach who stepped into role of head coach when head coach
stepped out.  Last summer he, Rachel and Susan hosted team activities at their
home….off ice conditioning and fun.

Ed Pasto:
Ed and Linda's daughter Beth finished her Shooting Stars days four years ago but he
has remained involved as assistant coach with the 14us this year and with this group
of girls from when they were in House.  Involvement with hockey is over 20 years
since his sons also played.n she
was a new Cornell student, and then as

Dave presented this year’s Megan Shull Award winner, Cathy Long.

Cathy Long has served as Registrar for two years after two years as the first ever
Vice President for Travel when TGHA created the two
VP administration. Before that she chaired the Central Sectional Tournament when
TGHA hosted it four years ago, and she has been a key person for the Shooting Stars
tournament every year since Katie began playing for the Shooting Stars.  Katie’s two
sisters and dad are active with other local sports but they have supported Cathy and
Katie with their involvement with TGHA. Cathy is a professional administrator at
Cornell and brought a high sense of integrity and responsibility to her volunteer
work with TGHA.

One fellow board member said about Cathy: The Registrar is a thankless
task....especially for the House programs (tracking who is in, who is in what
program, what package did each player commit to.....)  The Registrar touches so many
aspects of the program: supporting Travel and House programs, creating rosters,
collaboration with the treasurer, collaboration with ice scheduler on the setting of
fees, and the list goes on.  I enjoyed working with Cathy - she gets the job done
as well as brings a sense of calm.

Mary then surprised Dave by announcing that this year there are two awardees--Cathy
and Dave Herrick!

Both Dave and Cathy are great supporters of TGHA as board members and proud
parents.  Over the years, each have taken on large roles and they don't ask for
recognition or promotion.  They just quietly do their work in support of the
program.

Dave has held so many postions within TGHA....I'm not sure I know al
l of them:  association ice scheduler, cub club, co-president, I'm sure the list
goes on......  He is commited, supportive and works hard for the success of the
program.  He is a good listener and willing to assist.

One board member said: "What stands out in my mind about Dave is his calm, solid,
supporting attitude with the girls and parents as an assistant coach - he has been
the one constant person that the girls could count on over the years.  (I looked at
other words to use in place of constant and came up: unfailing, diligent, loyal,
faithful, staunch, true, and loyal - all words that I would use to describe Dave).
The teams have had their share of issues, but Dave was always there to help bring
out the best in each player, treating all as equals and working on necessary skills
with those who could use the extra help.  As an assistant coach, he could stand back
a bit and see the bigger picture and be better able to help where that help was
needed.  Dave never faltered and always came through on a promise.  He is always
willing to help both on and off the ice - to step above and beyond the call of
duty".

In a night of surprises, Mary found that Dave and the board had planned something
special for her (stay tuned for an upcoming TGHA Update!).
