Enrollment is Open for Newcomers

Catherine Van Brunschot is TGHA's external communications coordinator.  She developed this news release which you can cut and paste and send to your friends, neighbors, relatives to encourage them to play hockey....at any age!

Girls in Initation and House should mark their calendars for Monday, January 7--Bring a Friend to Hockey Day at The RINK!  (Recreation girls, you can bring a friend every week as we work to build up your program!)

Catherine has also developed posters/fliers and could use your help to hang them around town or to hand them out where girls are likely to be skating or doing other sports.  Contact her at cvanbrunschot@gmail.com

Girls Hockey 35th Anniversary Season Continues with Ongoing Enrollment and New Opportunities

Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA) is looking again for girls and women who are interested in learning how to play ice hockey or in getting back into the game after a break.  TGHA currently has open enrollment for three programs: Initiation hockey for beginners of any age; Recreation hockey for middle school or high school girls who can already skate or play hockey; and a new offering in Beginner Women’s hockey for women who would like to try out the sport on a drop-in basis.

Girls in the Initiation program receive lessons in skating and hockey skills and play games at the beginner level on Mondays at 6:00 p.m. at The RINK and/or Thursdays at 5:15 p.m. at Cass Park Rink.  Girls may choose to attend the program only one day per week, or for both sessions each week.  Coaches emphasize having fun while safely learning the fundamentals of the game of ice hockey. The Initiation program is open to girls ages 4 and up.  Girls can advance to TGHA’s House program whenever they are deemed ready by the trained coaching staff.

Girls who are interested in finding out more about Initiation hockey are invited to attend TGHA’s “Bring a Friend to Practice Night” on January 7, 2008 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm at The Rink (1767 East Shore Drive, north of Ithaca).

For middle school and high school girls who have some experience with hockey, TGHA offers Recreation Hockey on Thursday nights at Cass Park Rink from 6:45 to 7:45 pm.  Girls can enjoy skills sessions and scrimmages in a fun, non-competitive atmosphere through the Recreation program.  Figure skaters who are interested in learning a new dimension on ice are invited to join Recreation hockey as well.

In addition, TGHA is providing a new opportunity for adult women who would like to try the sport of ice hockey.  Beginner Women’s hockey is offered on Thursdays from 6:45 to 7:45 pm at Cass Park Rink.  Women are introduced to the fundamentals of the game by a female coach/hockey player in a fun and supportive environment.  Participation is on a drop-in basis, but interested women are asked to RSVP by noon each Thursday (email TGHA0708@yahoo.com or call Mary at 280-4380) to ensure adequate staffing.  Women (who must register with USA Hockey) will be charged $10 per session they attend.  Those women wanting to take their hockey to the next level can continue by playing with the Ithaca Furies or Sirens women’s hockey teams.

For more information about registration, used equipment loans, and scholarships, call 539-6920 or email TGHA0708@yahoo.com.  Further details about these programs as well as registration with USA Hockey can also be found at www.ithacagirlshockey.com
