Invite Friends to Try Girls Hockey Oct. 22 and Open House Oct. 29

Spread the Word!

Girls of all ages are invited by Tompkins Girls Hockey Association to two upcoming events introducing girls to ice hockey on Monday, October 22 and Monday, October 29. TGHA is celebrating its 35th anniversary this season; Ithaca is home to the third oldest girls ice hockey program in the country.

"Try Girls Hockey" is a special free event planned for October 22 at
6:30 p.m. October 29 at 6:30 p.m. is the annual Open House when new girls who are thinking of joining TGHA this season get together with those who already play girls ice hockey.  Both will occur at The RINK, 1767 East Shore Drive, north of Ithaca.

On October 22, TGHA coaches and players will be on hand to introduce girls and their parents to the sport before they go on the ice.  Free skate rentals will be available and there will be hockey equipment to borrow for the evening. Fun activities are planned to help them get a feel for playing hockey before deciding to start in TGHA's Initiation program for beginners. "Try Girls Ice Hockey" is scheduled for
6:30-8:00 p.m.

"Open House" is the traditional kickoff (or face off!) for the TGHA year. New and continuing skaters participate in this social event from
6:30-8:00 p.m. on October 29 which features a special on-ice welcome to new members as well as off-ice games, speeches, door prizes and refreshments! Skate rentals are free. No one wears full hockey equipment for Open House, but there will be information about the necessary equipment for beginners who will have their first practice on Thursday, Nov. 1.

TGHA offers a progression of instructional and competitive experiences beginning with Initiation (offered once or twice a week for girls ages 4 and up). Girls then advance to the House League after one or more years in Initiation.  After developing basic skills in Initiation and House, some girls choose to join a travel team at the 12U, 14U, 16U or 19U age level.  Girls who are not interested in playing on an Ithaca Shooting Stars travel team can participate in recreational hockey.  Some become coaches or referees as well.

TGHA offers scholarships and operates a used equipment loan program.  New TGHA members benefit from the special mentoring program called 'Cub Club'.  The Cornell Women's Hockey team members are "Big Red Sisters" to the youngest girls hockey players in the "Cub Club".

Information on all aspects of the program and the fees can be obtained by checking <www.ithacagirlshockey.com> or by contacting 539-6920, TGHA0708@yahoo.com.

October 13 Take A Shot at Hockey

TGHA and IYHA have partnered to offer a special event for prospective hockey players on Saturday, Oct. 13, 9:30-11:00 a.m., at The RINK.  It's a free opportunity for boys and girls ages 4 and up to wear some hockey equipment (helmets and gloves required when on the ice) and discover the 'coolest sport around'.  Skate rentals will be free, too. Coaches from both Ithaca Youth Hockey Association and Tompkins Girls Hockey Association will be on hand to lead on-ice activities and to answer questions about the programs which begin in late October.  For IYHA, contact Rick at 273-3921 and for TGHA , contact Karen at 539-6920.

Cornell Hockeyfest Oct. 21

Cornell Hockeyfest! What promises to be a great day and hopefully the start of a new tradition for hockey lovers of all ages! Cornell women's hockey coach Doug Derraugh has planned a full day of fun for both the die-hard hockey fan and those who haven't discovered the joy of our beloved sport yet.

On October 21, 2007, please join us at Lynah Rink for a full slate of on-ice and off-ice action. Doug has been kind enough to make this day not just about Cornell hockey, but also to promote all the local hockey programs. I would like to see us participate to the fullest extent possible as this is a great outreach opportunity.

I would like to have some volunteers, be it the girls or parents to help run some off ice activities in the Ramin Room. We would like to do three stations, one for slapshots with a radar gun, one for accuracy with Cornells shooter tutor, and a stickhandling course.

Along with that we will have a table for TGHA info and a Cub Cub display. If you have any ideas or would like to help out please call or email Wayde Whittaker. WMW9@cornell.edu or call 327-1588. Help to make this a successful day and expose TGHA to as many new people as possible.

Stay tuned for more information as we work out the details, but for now
some of the planned events are:

Shooting Stars girls hockey game to watch in the morning
Poster(or jersey, stick, etc.) signing by the women's team
Lots of off-ice activities in the Ramin room late a.m. pregame
Food and drinks
Raffles

Women's hockey game at 1pm vs. Vermont,  and Men's exhibition game vs Ottawa at 4pm (Tickets available for $20 gets you in both games!)
Special t-shirt package for sale; $25 gets you a Cornell hockey tee and season tickets to womens hockey.

Thats all for now but please let me know if you would like to help on the 21st so I know how much we can do!  Thanks, Wayde
