TGHA Board Election News

On May 13, TGHA re-elected to two year terms Barbara Horton, Judy Yonkin and Wayde Whittaker.  Heather Swift and Kathey MacQueen were elected to their first terms.  Two more board members are needed--one for a two year term and one for a one year term. Continuing board members include John Golay, Cathy Long, David Herrick, Karen Muckstadt.  We bid farewell to Catherine Van Brunschot who is moving away.  Matt Ulinski, Lita Remsen, Cindy McPherson, and Mary Grainger are also completing terms.  Matt and Mary will continue to be involved with TGHA in numerous ways including transition this summer. Once two more board members join, those elected will organize into roles so all functions are covered.

Please consider stepping up to one of the openings.  Let Mary or Matt or any other board member know of your interest.

The next meeting is tentatively scheduled for June 3 at 7:00 p.m. Stay tuned for more news on that.

Photos Needed for www.ithacagirlshockey.com

I am currently updating the photos on the TGHA website, but am in serious need of photos of Initiation, House, and Rec players - as well as coaches, registration, Cub Club, and other TGHA leaders.  If you have digital photos of any of these subjects, I would love to have copies.

Please email me at cvanbrunschot@gmail.com - and thanks for your help!

NYSAHA Annual Meeting

Next weekend is the annual meeting of New York State Amateur Hockey Association being hosted by our section, Central, and occurring in Verona at Turning Stone.  Barbara Horton and the Graingers have helped by facilitating Ithaca Soda donation from the Mitchells and Fall Creek Produce from Dan Doerr.

On Saturday there are discussions on many topics of interest.  Let Mary know if you'd like the schedule and to know about possible carpools. On Sunday there is a voting meeting. TGHA has 9 delegate votes but not 9 attending. Let Mary know if you can travel to Verona Sunday. There is a social event Saturday night, too.

Sign Up for Summer 2008 TGHA Hockey

TGHA is sponsoring an exciting summer hockey program that will help improve your skating, skill development and game fundamentals just in time for the upcoming season. There will be six evening sessions offered during July and August for all girls hockey players registered with USA Hockey. The ice time will be split based on age and ability so that each participant is offered appropriate level practice and scrimmage opportunities.

The House session should be a good fit for our Initiation and many House or Recreation level skaters. We will focus on basic skating technique, puck handling and of course fun games. We are delighted to have Beth Mannion, our TGHA friend and assistant coach with Initiation, lead the instruction for the House sessions.

For the Travel team and advanced House skaters we'll offer some higher intensity and physically challenging skating drills together with practice to improve your puck control and shooting skills. In addition to the talents of our Travel team coaches, the skaters in this session will receive the benefits of Beth Mannion's training in power skating.

Look forward in your calendars to July and August and save the Monday dates listed below to join us for some fun filled evenings at The RINK!

Celebrate the mother-daughter bond!

"Moms as Mentors" returns to Ithaca on August 9th and will be held at Cornell University’s Hoffman Challenge Course.  "Moms as Mentors" is a unique program started by a Cornell Johnson School alumna that brings together mothers and daughters for a day of team-building, fitness and wellness, and leadership training activities.  Acknowledging the central role of mothers in their daughters’ development, the program creates the opportunity for sharing, bonding, and fun!  The dynamic curriculum is open to girls in grades 3 – 8 and their moms.  If moms are not able to attend, special friends are also welcome.

Tuition for the program is $95 per pair for the full day experience.  Sibling discounts and scholarships are also available.  To learn more or to register for the memorable and fun one-day program email info@momsasmentors.com or visit www.momsasmentors.com.

Note: Founder and director Emilie Liebhoff was a student of Melissa Thomas-Hunt; Sophia participated in last year's pilot program before Emilie moved to the Boston area. She played hockey when an undergraduate at Dartmouth.

I just want to make sure that you are not falling prey to the #1 mistake most female players will be making this off-season.

If you haven't read the report yet, go back and find out:

1) What the mistake is

2) Why players can't afford to make it

3) What to do to increase performance and decrease injury next season

My best advice - build your strength and watch your performance soar.

Also be sure to check out the Total Female Hockey Blog for expert advice and

important tips on how to take your game to the next level.

We look forward to returning once again this summer, bringing a solid well rounded camp to your neighborhood. With gas prices as high as they are this year, you will have no need for unnecessary travel expenses to attend outside camps this summer, we will be bringing our 19 years of hockey camp experience to your city. Here is a general overview of our 2008 summer instructional program:

1.       Daily Power Skating (1.5 hours/day) - Forward Stride, Tight Turns, Backwards

Skating & Stops & Starts - Emphasizing deep knee bend and proper body

posture

2.       Daily Puckhandling (1.5 hours/day) - Passing, Shooting, 1 on 1's, 2 on 1's & Intro. to Checking - Emphasizing hand eye coordination & quick decision making

3.       Daily Individualized Goalie Training (3 hours/day) - Stance & Movement, The Pad Save, The Glove Save & The Break-Away Save - Emphasizing quick reaction and increasing athleticism within the goal crease

4.       Daily Video Analysis - Each student (Player & Goalie) will receive a 1 on 1 video analysis of their daily drill with the Head Instructor, including audio, telestrator, computer comparisons and the introduction of our New SIHA Video Lab and Coach Cam (Student & Instructor). This entire process is recorded to each student's take-home VHS tape or DVD, for future review and a nice keepsake of the camp.

5.       Daily Off-Ice Shooting - Each student will experience our SIHA Shooting Gallery for 45 minutes/day (wrist, backhand, snap & slap shots - with rotating targets) - Elite players will fire weighted pucks for further strength development & shot accuracy on a daily basis.

6.       Daily Off-Ice Conditioning - Each student will endure 35 minutes of intense, fast paced Russian Training to accentuate the strength of various hockey muscles and increase lower body quickness. All drills are worked out to music, for rhythm and fun.

7.       Daily Lectures - All students will sit in on a series of lectures throughout the week, including; Rules Discussions, Break-Away Moves, Think Hockey Lecture (finer points of the game) and our famous Friday Bloopers Lecture

8.       Exciting Extras (included) - Camp jersey, 7 page Progress Report, 50 page Player/Goaltender's Manual, take-home video analysis tape/DVD and Sher-Wood (Sponsor) prizes.

9.       Camp Features - Radar Gun (shot speed), weighted pucks (off-ice), standardized hockey testing and report, Musical Ice Sprints, Lunch Program ("Uncle Bob's Bar BQ") and finally our 19th year of the "Pylon Cup" Game.

10.     Staffing - All staff have been hand selected and individually trained by The Sport International Hockey Academy, and come highly recommended from their college hockey organizations (Division 1 & 3 N.C.A.A. & former pro hockey players). "Our best guarantee for a quality hockey education!" Our staff are all very charismatic and extremely good with younger hockey players.

We invite you to be a part of our 19th version of The Sport International Hockey Academy this summer. We have plenty of exciting new program components to our camp this year and we hope that you will choose SIHA for your hockey camp experience. If you should have any questions about our summer offer, please feel free to call 1-800-724-6658. We look forward to seeing you this summer and continuing our tradition of "Working Hard & Having Fun". We'll see you soon!
