Cub Club Movie Night

It's finally here! Cub Club movie night will be held next Thursday March 27th at Lynah Rink.

If you've never experienced movie night before you're in for a treat! This is by far the most popular event of the year where the girls can just hang out with their big sister and have fun.

All you need to do is bring your favorite pillow, blanket, or sleeping bag so you can get comfortable as this event is held in the girls locker/ training facility. The Cornell team provides the movie and snacks.

The fun starts at 6:30pm and wraps up at about 8:30pm.

If you have any questions please call 387-3577 or email me at wmw9@cornell.edu

Thanks,

Wayde

Next Board Meeting

Remember how well our Big Red women did against Harvard?  Knowing how well our hometown heroes could do against one of the FROZEN FOUR may make you more interested to follow the NCAA this weekend as Harvard plays with Wisconsin, University of New Hampshire and University of Minnesota-Duluth!

Many local connections as Wisconsin's assistant is Cornell alumna Tracey Cornell (no relation to our local hockey family!), Duluth's starting goalie Kim Martin used to come to the Cornell camp (from Sweden!), Wisconsin's Kyla Sanders played in one of our tournaments when she was 12U, and Ithacan Lucy Schoedel is with UNH.  There are probably other connections....feel free to write in!

Dads and Daughters is a great resource for parents of girls and they published a special enewsletter about watching basketball with your daughter:

Banquet Highlights/Share Photos

Do you have photos from the banquet on Tuesday that you would share with TGHA?  We can build a photo montage for the web site with your help.  Send to mmgithaca@aol.com.

In addition to celebrating the girls, several awards were made (see below).  Each team shared in their own way about their season from Initiation showing how they can stand off ice as well as on ice on one foot and no feet....to the older teams showing off their trophies.  Maybe we can think of another format since it would be great to have everyone able to attend and stay to the end.  Send your ideas to the board via tgha0708@yahoo.com.

Special thanks to Julie Umbach's helpers including (but not limited to) Amy Rogers, Lisa Watkins, Maria Rabb, Karen Muckstadt, Barb Just, Catherine Van Brunschot!

Golden Puck Awards were given to:

Non-parent volunteers:

Maddy Russell and Maureen Cooney who ran the Penalty Box Sports for many years helping us get equipped, and then donated some to TGHA at the time of their going-out-of-business sale!

Brianne Schmidt, Cornell team captain, who ran TGHA's summer program in 2007

Lita Remsen, Initiation coach, coaching coordinator, board member

Karen Uber, Recreation coach, Cornell senior who 'grew up in TGHA' Initiation through Shooting Stars

Parent volunteers who wear many hats:

Judy Yonkin, treasurer, apparel sales, 14U manager

Cathy Long, registrar, tournament specialist, finance committee

David Herrick, ice scheduler for season, off season and tournament, 14U coach

Barbara Horton, sponsorship/fund raising and on-ice whenever possible especially helpful with adult women and Recreation as well as Put the Biscuit in the Net

And our banquet coordinator extraordinaire Julie Umbach

The 16/19U Shooting Stars read the nomination letters that came in supporting Karen Cole as the 2008 Megan Shull Award recipient:

Each year TGHA honors a supporter of girls' hockey with the Megan Shull Award.  It is given annually at this banquet to a truly remarkable and outstanding person who has:

1. Demonstrated by his or her character, actions, commitment and enthusiasm special qualities which have significantly benefited girls hockey in this community;

2. Inspired others with a boldness to dream of goals;

3. Smiled and applauded the achievements of all.

A Susan B. Anthony dollar adorns the trophy and plaque.  Just as Susan B. Anthony led the way for women to vote, TGHA has created the opportunities for young women to play hockey in our community.

This year’s Megan Shull Award winner is Karen Cole. Karen is assistant coach of the 16U and 19U Shooting Stars and mother of Lauren.

Karen has been a mentor and role model for the team not only this past year but also for the previous 8 years.  Karen has made herself available to us to discuss hockey issues as well as personal issues.

She has always gone above and beyond the call of duty.  Her attitude is incredibly positive.  Karen takes the time to treat each girl as an individual. Karen was there for the team throughout the year during all of our ups and downs. She was always cheering us on and smiling and applauding throughout every game.

Karen inspired people around her to strive for the best that they could be. She encouraged us to keep going even if we were tired. Our team left everything we had on the ice because she encouraged us and pushed us to the best we could be.

Karen even took a puck for our team earlier in the year!  She remained calm even when she was in pain. (Puck flew at her on the bench during a game in Canton, NY!)

She brought out the best in all of us even if we weren't up to it.  Karen believed in our team and in the end it showed in the way that our team played. Thank you Karen for all that you have done, you have made each of us better players and by example better people.
