Cub Club News

Greetings Cub Club families,

This weekend please come out to see your big sisters play what may be their last home games of the year. Currently they are in contention for a playoff spot but most likely they will play away from Lynah Rink.

They take on Dartmouth at 7pm on Friday, and Harvard at 4pm on Saturday, so if you haven't made it to a game this year this could be your last chance!

We need stick girls and little bears for both nights so again if you haven't had the chance to participate this year, or would like to do it again please let me know ASAP!

Saturday is also Senior Recognition Day so if your big sister is a senior you are asked to please come and be part of the ceremonies. You get to join your big sister on the ice and wish her well as she moves on to the next phase of her life.

We have two more Cub Club group functions coming up soon. One is movie night at

Lynah, and the second (and new this year!) is a joint practice/ skate with the girls at Lynah!

In closing, the Cornell team and coaches go out of their way to make sure the TGHA girls have some fun and exciting events throughout the year, and all they ask in return is that we show up and cheer them on during their games. Let's have a great showing this weekend so they know how much we appreciate all they do for us.

As always if you have any questions please feel free to contact me at 387-3577 or 327-1588.

Thanks,

Wayde

Cornell Men and Women

Topher Scott has now been named a finalist for the Lowe's Senior Class award for men's hockey -- the award honors those who stay in school for 4 years and give back to the community.  http://www.seniorclassaward.com

Rebecca Johnston was named ECAC Hockey’s Rookie of the Week for the third time this season it was announced by the league office on Monday afternoon. Johnston helped lead the Big Red women’s hockey team to a conference sweep against Union and RPI on the road last weekend.

Johnston scored two goals in Friday’s 3-2 win over Union, and added a goal and an assist against RPI on Saturday afternoon. In the two games, she notched a power play and shorthanded goal while scoring a game-winner. Adding four points for the weekend, Johnston became the first Cornell player to earn 30 points in a season since the 1997-98 campaign.

In her rookie season with the Big Red, Johnston has played in 22 games. The freshman forward has missed four games this season due to playing with the Canadian National Team and the Canadian Under-22 team at the European Air Canada Cup and 4 Nations Cup.

Johnston also earned ECAC Hockey Rookie of the Week honors on Nov. 19 and Oct. 22. She will join her teammates in playing host to Harvard and Dartmouth this weekend in Cornell’s final home games of the season. Johnston and the Big Red sit in seventh place in the league, and she will be looking to help her team to secure a top eight placing to earn a playoff spot.

Section IV Hall of Fame

H.S. notebook: Ithaca grads Cartmill, House to join section's Hall of Fame

The Section 4 Athletic Council announced its 2008 Hall of Fame inductees and among the 28 honorees are Ithaca High graduates Kevin Cartmill and Leanna House.

House, a 1994 graduate, excelled in several sports, but her specialties at Ithaca High were soccer and outdoor track.

She earned all-Southern Tier Athletic Conference honors in each of her six seasons on the track team and was merited the same consideration in three of her years on the soccer team.

House moved on to Cornell, where she played four seasons on the soccer and ice hockey teams. As a high school senior she was invited to the USA National Junior Olympic training camp for the latter despite not playing for Ithaca High (boys only).

“(Being inducted) makes me more appreciative for the people who gave me the opportunity to do these things,” House said. “From my mom and dad to the coaches, it reminds you of all the people that contributed.”

She currently works in the statistician field.

Both athletes' names were submitted to the Section 4 Athletic Council by Ithaca athletic director Bill Bryant, who saw both in action during what is now a 20-year stint as Ithaca AD.

“I'm very happy for both of them, they're very deserving athletes,” he said. “Kevin was our first ever golf champion... and in the last two years of basketball he was instrumental to the team's success.”

“Leanna was, and still is, a great young lady. We didn't have ice hockey at the time, but she excelled in soccer and track and field.”

Inductions will take place Saturday, March 1 at the Broome County Arena between the first and second sectional championship basketball games on the schedule.
