Hockey Weekend Across America

THIS WEEKEND is Hockey Weekend Across America for all hockey fans and players. Be sure to enter the Hockey Weekend Across America Great Prize Giveaway at http://www.usahockey.com/HWAA/

Friday, Feb. 15 - Wear Your Jersey to School Day

Show your hockey spirit by wearing your favorite jersey from any level of hockey (youth, high school, college, pro, etc.) to school.

Saturday, Feb. 16 - Bring a Friend to the Rink Day

No matter what the event is (a youth game, an open skate or a professional game) do your best to bring a friend to the rink to introduce them to the sport.

(Local note: since this is the first weekend of winter recess and the Cornell women are away, there is less girls hockey to spectate.  There's IHS Boys on Friday night at The RINK and you might find the Colgate vs. Clarkson women's game on Ch 26 Time Warner Sports....or make a date to take your friend to the rink another day...even to see your own practice!)

Sunday, Feb. 17 - Celebrate Local Hockey Heroes Day

Honor your favorite coach, timekeeper, official, player, etc., -- show the community what hockey has done for you and thank those who make it happen.

Stay tuned for a future TGHA All message honoring some of our own special people.  Send to mmgithaca@aol.com if you find your own way to show your appreciation.

Decals for Sale/Support TGHA

Thursday Feb. 14 is Valentine's Day but also a great day to buy a TGHA 35th anniversary decal; Barbara Horton will be at Cass from 6:15-until the end altho she is often on the ice during Recreation time at 6:45.  She has a supply of decals; read below.

In recognition of the founding of TGHA in 1972, a special logo was designed (see www.ithacagirlshockey.com) and patches made for every player to attach to their uniform.

We also wanted to provide parents and coaches with something in celebration so we created window decals (that also promote TGHA if placed in a visible place!).  In the Grainger family, mine is on my car but Brad's is on his laptop.  Think about where to put yours, and please buy one the next time your team manager or VP or President sees you when they have their supply ready.

Since the anniversary is not a standard operating expense of TGHA, we are paying for the patches (given free to every player) by selling the decals.  Hope every family has a decal as well as helps their daughter attach her patch to the jersey.

Vote for Top NCAA Seniors

Message from former TGHA mom and president Rosie Mayer:

Hi Hockey Fans! Cornell men's hockey captain Topher Scott has been nominated to participate in the Frozen Four Skills Challenge, but he needs votes to actually compete.  To vote for him, go to the NCAA Frozen Four site -- http://www.ncaasports.com/icehockey/mens/fanpolls/1024

and click on the "Men's East" link to vote.  You can only vote once, so I'm counting on all of you to put him over the top! Voting closes on Thursday, so don't delay.

PS from Mary Grainger:

You can vote once in each NCAA division!  ECAC East includes two girls who grew up skating in NYS: MaryKate Oakley of Princeton and Meaghan Guckian of St. Lawrence.  Also for ECAC West note Cornellian Matt Moulson's sister Shannon of Niagara.

NGWSD This Weekend

The Ithaca College and Cornell University departments of athletics will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day on Saturday, February 16 on East Hill and Sunday, February 17 on South Hill.

On Sunday, February 17, Ithaca College invites all girls grades 3 through 6 to attend a free non-competitive event celebrating girls and women in sports, and enjoy an afternoon of fun and physical activity. Activities including basketball skills, track & field skills, team building, team work and obstacle courses will be overseen by Ithaca College's women's varsity student-athletes and coaches.

Registration begins at 11:45 am in Ithaca College's Hill Center Lobby outside the Ben Light Gymnasium. Activities will take place from noon - 2 p.m. All girls should be picked up by 2:30 pm. A participation waiver must be signed by a parent or legal guardian for permission to engage in the day’s activities. Please contact Andrea McClatchie for a waiver or with any questions; 274-3793 or amcclatchie@ithaca.edu.

Cornell's offering for area girls is Saturday, February 16 from 4:45 p.m. - 6:45 p.m. with registration at 4:30 p.m. in lobby of Bartels Hall. The Climbing Wall will be open to the first 20 girls (parents must be present to sign release form). There will be skill sessions run by various women's sports teams in the Ramin Room. The event is free, and the first 100 girls will also get a free t-shirt. Participants will also receive admission to the 7:00 p.m. Cornell Women's Basketball game in the Newman Arena. Please contact either Myra Hubbell@ mhubbell@hotmail.com or Karen Bennett @ broganbennett@yahoo.com if you have any additional questions.

Summer Hockey

TGHA is working on plans for a series of ice sessions in July and August. We are seeking ideas of what to offer and for which age group/levels.  Send your ideas to tgha0708@yahoo.com.

Did you see the latest USA Hockey Magazine? It included summer camp listings.  Some girls can't get enough hockey and will want to do some year round (on the occasional basis available) but should also pursue spring/summer/fall recreational and/or competitive sports.
