Practice on Thursday Jan. 3

Regular practices will occur at Cass Park, and Monday only Initiation girls are welcome to skate with the Thursday girls since there hasn't been a Monday ice time during the holidays.

The weather prediction is for cold but not as windy as Wednesday.  Even so, it will feel 10 degrees or cooler.  Below is some advice for players and their parents and coaches regarding playing in frigid conditions.

Bring a Friend to Hockey Jan. 7

The TGHA leadership and coaches will be on hand Monday January 7 for the 6:00-7:00 p.m. time slot at The RINK.  Initiation (and House and Recreation) girls are encouraged to bring newcomers at any time of the year, but this night will be an especially easy one for beginners to be welcomed. During this time slot, we will have the NYSAHA equipment available for use that day for newcomers, and the TGHA equipment is accessible for those we plan to sign up for Half Season for Initiation, House or Recreation.

Half Season Initiation for 2008

This date also represents the mid-point of the season so girls who are signed up for the first half of the season can sign up for the second half for $60.  See VP House Karen Muckstadt to tell her your plans.  Checks can be given to Karen or mailed to TGHA, PO Box 3962, Ithaca, NY 14852.

Registration Fees Message

Just a friendly reminder that if you paid your daughter's registration fees with two checks, your second check will now be deposited on January 10, 2008.  If there is a problem, please contact me at JLYonkin@twcny.rr.com.  Thank you,  Judy Yonkin, TGHA Treasurer

Clothing Order Take Two

If you missed the first TGHA Clothing order deadline, or would like to order something more - here is a second chance to order TGHA apparel and accessories.

Now would also be the perfect time to think about coaches' gifts - and with the option to put the TGHA anniversary logo on any item currently on the order form, what better way to mark the year for your coaches.

NEW Item now available but not on the form:  Yellow baseball cap with TGHA anniversary logo, $12.00.   Write in on the form how many caps you wish to order.

Order Forms are attached and on the web site, and orders are due to your team manager by Thursday, January 17.

American Girl Doll Plays Hockey!

The American Girl catalog and web site have introduced the Doll of the Year for 2008 and her name is Mia.  She has a hockey jersey, stick and puck because she grew up playing hockey although her current passion is figure skating. Other American Girl dolls have played soccer and ridden horses and gone skiing, now it's time to have girls ice hockey featured! (Too bad there's no helmet or other protective gear!)

Missing Player

At the proactive request of the Perinton Youth Hockey Association, could you please forward this e-mail to as many of your association personnel and families as possible?

Thank you,

Gary Lebrun, Central Section President

Andrew Dezio has now been missing since 12/23. Andrew plays on a PYH midget team and on the Penfield JV team. He is 14 years old.  The police are asking for any help with leads to where he could be or was last seen.   Anyone who has seen Andrew is asked to call  911.

*Frigid Weather Advice

A few years ago in January "Professor" John Uber, then TGHA Coaching Coordinator and 19U Head Coach wrote the following for his team and for the TGHA Coaches, and each year there is at least one Cass Park TGHA practice when we need to be reminded of this information:

"It's January, it's Ithaca, and we have practice at Cass. Who'da seen this coming?

We have one or two of these bitter cold nights each season.

The wind chill is something we have all experienced out there - even when it's reasonable weather - just by skating around on a cold surface. The effect is exacerbated by a colder ambient temperature, and high surface winds. You lose heat principally through two heat transfer mechanisms in this type of weather - conduction and convection. The convection is the most dangerous tonight.

A couple of points of caution:

1. Coaches - especially those of younger players - please be mindful of the body temperatures of your players. Some of us coaches have built-in layers of insulation when we go on the ice, but some of your players don't have these natural protectors.  Try to warmup a little before you go on. Another technique is to go out on the ice for a hard 5-10 minute skate, then take the players into the warming area for a few minutes. This will allow the body heat to go through the layers of clothing, and once the body is generating excess heat, the outer layer of clothing will be cold at the surface, but the body will remain warm. Key terms are thermal gradient, steady state-steady flow, and boundary layer.

If a player complains about the cold, get her off the ice, and allow her to warm up.

2. The extremities (e.g., fingers, toes, ear lobes), and exposed surfaces (face) are the most vulnerable, and the first ones to check. A couple of tricks for protection of these parts -

    - thin layers, long johns, union suits, polypropylene suits.

    - wear thin socks and gloves inside to act as liners. Heavy socks with tight skates will restrict circulation and increase cooling

    - use a little baby oil on your hands, feet, face, and ears.

The baby oil thing prevents evaporation from those surfaces (and makes your skin oh so smooth and baby fresh). "
