Banquet Success and Thanks
Last Wednesday, the Boynton cafeteria was filled with TGHA
players of all ages, TGHA coaches and parents, and Cornell women's hockey
players. The annual banquet was a big success with bright yellow balloon
decorations, delicious food (organic greens and Purity ice cream!), fun door
prizes, and great company.
Kudos to Julie Umbach and all of her helpers (mostly from the
13U Shooting Stars) and to President and MC Carol Mullins. In addition to
recognition of girls and coaches of all TGHA teams, we were treated to remarks
by Olympic Bronze Medalist/Cornell asst coach/Brown alumna/Rochester native
Kim Insalaco.
One highlight was the awarding of the annual Megan Shull Award
to Michelle and Dennis Mogil. Below are Carol's remarks about the Mogils and
a message from Michelle to TGHA.
Megan Shull Award was given to Michelle and Dennis
Mogil, dedicated TGHA parents and community members.
Michelle has been on the TGHA board for five years, four of which she served
as treasurer--a thankless job of handling the finances, paying bills and
depositing funds. This past year, she remained on the board even though none
of her children were playing hockey in the TGHA. In addition to serving
board, Michelle had served as coach in the Initiation program, first as an
assistant, and then two years as the Head Initiation Coach. Amazingly again,
during those two years, none of her daughters were in Initiation. However
with all these responsibilities, she did not ignore her daughters, as a parent
for the teams they played on, she was an active supporter--always attending
games and encouraging the team members. She also plays herself, skating with
the Ithaca Furies.
Dennis was an integral part to the success of the Shooting Stars Tournament as
he spent countless hours behind the scenes designing, producing and printing
the game programs for several years.
Without the dedication, spirit and commitment of these two people TGHA would
have had a large void. Thank you both for your involvement with TGHA.
Dear TGHA players and families:
I was truly taken by surprise Wednesday night, and I think I
was babbling incoherently, so I'd like to express my gratitude in a more
rational, articulate fashion.
We've been with TGHA for about eight years, I think. My middle
daughter was drawn into the game by a schoolmate when she was 11 or 12. Soon
after, our youngest took up the sport, and eventually Mom was pulled in
because it just looked like so much fun. Our family has had its share of ups
and downs during that time, as a lot of families do, but we knew we had a
terrific place to go for stress relief: hockey.
I've always been grateful that TGHA was there to help my middle
daughter pick up the pieces after a very rough time in her life. Playing
hockey taught her discipline and patience, and helped her regain confidence in
herself. She's carried that into adulthood and it shows in the way she deals
with life's obstacles and opportunities. I honestly feel that TGHA had a part
in shaping her into the remarkable young lady she is today.
The members of this association have given us tremendous
support and encouragement in the face of recent unfortunate events in our
family's life. Even though my youngest daughter chose to forego hockey this
season, you have stood by us and lent a helping hand and a sympathetic ear.
And now, you honor us with this amazing award. Dennis and I
have only tried to give back a little of what TGHA has given our daughters.
His response, when I gave him his medal was "Oh my gosh. There are so many
people who deserve this more than us." We're both proud and humbled that
we're held in such high regard. So, thank you from our family to a fantastic
organization that does so much for its girls. Keep up the excellent work!
