Team Formation ice sessions this weekend were held and head coaches have been communicating with each other and with the players and their families. There continues to be room on the 12U and 19U team rosters. Interested players should contact the 19U coach or the 12U team contact, and begin registration procedures.

The 19U team and parents will meet with Coach Rob Ralyea Sept. 19 starting at 7:30 p.m at Lynah.

The 16U parents will have a meeting Sept. 19 at 7:45 p.m. also at Lynah as the girls prepare to go on the ice.

Learn to Play Continues

Help is needed tonight at Learn to Play at The RINK. Helpers can assist as early as 5:30 p.m. with equipment loans and welcoming newcomers and the returning participants (120 different kids have attended...and attendance has been 60-80 each time!).  On ice helpers are needed 6-7 if they can't arrive a little earlier.  Adults who know how to play hockey must wear helmets, and the girls always wear theirs!

Thanks to Saturday's TGHA helpers: Rachel and Susan Brock, and Hannah Golay and Cindy Bray, Emily and Tony Eisenhut, Peter Dugan, Carol Mullins and John Uber!

Help will also be needed Saturday which runs 10:45-12:15 and the last Tuesday the 26th which is 6-7 p.m.

TGHA Update

September 15, 2006

EVERYONE needs to read President's Message

TRAVEL girls/families need to read all remaining information

President's Message

Parent Education Announcement

On behalf of the Board of Directors for the Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA), I officially wish to “Drop The Puck” on the 2006-2007 season! We are excited to get the season started as we welcome back all returning players, parents and coaches. I am also thrilled with the interest we have thus far in newcomers to TGHA and am sure you will all find a welcoming environment in which any aspiring young girl can play this great game!

With each new season there are updated guidelines, procedures and requests from the organizations that oversee TGHA, and also from within TGHA, to ensure that kids playing hockey are provided with a safe, educational, and fun time.  USA Hockey, (the governing body of all amateur hockey in the U.S.) holds each organization to guidelines, and it is up to our region (New York State Amateur Hockey Association –NYSAHA) and our section within NYSAHA (Central Section) to hold us accountable as an organization.

Accountability also lies with parents of players in these organizations.  With this in mind, NYSAHA is leading the nation in making it mandatory that one parent or legal guardian of each player who plays hockey in New York attend a Parent Education meeting before their child plays a game. This is a very important step which I believe will ensure that everyone involved–the  parents, coaches, officials and most importantly, the players,- will just let the game happen.

Along with the Ithaca Youth Hockey Association (IYHA) TGHA will be providing Parent Education sessions. At least one parent or legal guardian of each player must attend one of these sessions, otherwise your child will not be able to play hockey for TGHA, or within New York State. These are very educational sessions that will give you a  better understanding as to why it is that your child is playing the game, and about your involvement in their game that will help to ensure that we all remember to: “Relax, it’s just a game.”

Below you will find the dates and times which IYHA will be running their Parent Education sessions, all at The Rink in Lansing. I will be adding more dates to those and will announce them soon.  Please let me know which session you can attend by emailing me (with “Parent Education” in the subject line) at the address below. If you have any questions please contact me at the same address.

Parent Education Sessions at The Rink, Lansing
 Sept15th 6:00 pm    Sept 15th 8:00 pm

Oct 17th 6:00 pm    Oct 18th 6:30 pm,
Oct 18th 8:00 pm    Oct 19th 6:30 pm

In addition, I also highly encourage you all to get involved with TGHA off the ice, or, if you are qualified – on the ice! We always welcome anyone who can give time, expertise, experience and advice to TGHA each season. Please drop me a line if you wish to partake!

2006-07 Travel Team Formation
Additional information is below for girls who would like to be considered for a travel team at a higher age group:

TGHA's focus is to provide a high-quality hockey experience for girls of all ages and skill levels.  As such, one of the opportunities available to girls is to be considered for play on a team above their age group.

For girls who wish to play on a travel team at an age group above their own, please first communicate with the coaches of both age groups.  You should then attend the first team-formation/tryout ice session scheduled for the higher age group for which you would like to be considered.  For 16U and 14U, these sessions are on Saturday.

Coaches for 16U and 14U will make preliminary team formation decisions on Saturday evening and will contact these players that evening so they will know which formation session(s) to attend on Sunday.

We strongly encourage all girls to attend the team-formation session for both the age group which for which you are eligible based on birth date and for that of the older group on which you would like to be considered.

Players are encouraged to talk to the coaches before and/or after the first session if they have any questions about whether or not they should attend sessions for both age groups.

Final team formation decisions will be made and communicated to players before the first preseason ice session on Tuesday, September 19.

If you are interested in reading the TGHA team formation guidelines, they can be found on the TGHA seb site http://www.ithacahockey.com/registration/travel_guidelines.html .

We look forward to seeing all new and returning players this weekend!

Women's Hockey Team Gives Back to the Community

www.cornellbigred.com

On September 16, for the third consecutive year, the Big Red women's hockey team will volunteer its support with the Merryl Lynch Wheel-a-Thon to benefit the Foodnet Meals-On-Wheels program.

The Big Red will help lead and guide Wheel-a-Thon participants from all around Tompkins County in walking, skating, or biking the two-mile Cayuga Waterfront Trail. The team will also hand out playing cards at different checkpoints around the trail for the Drive the Poker Run event. Following the trail walk, the team will join in a celebration picnic, where they will serve a chicken barbecue. The celebration also includes a car show, prizes, and live music. The team will also host a Shooter Tutor where participants and community members can test their shooting ability.

Foodnet provides approximately 160,000 meals to residents all over Tompkins County. This event has raised over $12,000 annually in the past three years.

"We want to thank the Foodnet people for inviting us to participate in this event," the Big Red coaching staff said. "It is another opportunity for our team to get involved in the Ithaca community that gives so much to us throughout the year."

The Cornell Women's Hockey Team would like to encourage its supporters to come out to the Cass Park Pavillion on Saturday to join in the festivities. The Drive the Poker Run begins at 10 a.m., Walk the Waterfront Trail at 11 a.m., and the Celebration and Chicken BBQ at 12 noon. It's fun for the whole family!

Danielle Bilodeau '01 Named Assistant Women's Hockey Coach

Former Cornell women's hockey captain Danielle Bilodeau '01 will return to Lynah Rink this season, joining head coach Doug Derraugh on the Big Red coaching staff as assistant coach. Bilodeau spent the past four seasons working in a similar position at Ivy League rival Princeton.

"We're excited to bring a Cornellian back home who will help our program tremendously," Derraugh said. "Not only does Dani know the things that make Cornell special, but she also has outstanding experience successfully recruiting in the Ivy League."

While at Princeton, Bilodeau was responsible for assisting with all aspects of the program, from recruiting and scouting to skill development and travel. The Tigers claimed the 2005-06 Ivy League title and helped the program to its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. The team won a school-record 21 games. She assisted in the development of Andrea Kilbourne '03, a member of the silver-medal winning U.S. Olympic Women's Ice Hockey Team that won a silver medal at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. Nikola Holmes '03 also represented Germany in the 2006 games in Torino, Italy. In her four seasons on the sidelines, Princeton won at least 20 games three times and posted a 77-37-9 record.

An experienced camp clinician, Bilodeau was a head coach at the Princeton camp for three summers, as well as Bowdoin College's clinic in 2004 and 2005. She was also the head coach for the Pacific Steelers Showcase in 2005.

Bilodeau played four seasons for the Big Red, earning All-Ivy honors as a sophomore, and serving as team co-captain her senior year. The winner of Cornell's Jeff Stenstrom Memorial Award as a freshman, she was a nominee for the Hockey Humanitarian Award. The Academic All-Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) pick, Bilodeau was a member of the Red Key Athletic Honorary Society and the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC). After graduating in 2001 with a degree in communication, she played one season for the Beatrice Aeros of the NWHL, helping her team to a league and Ontario Provincial championships while reaching the finals of the Canadian national tournament.

"I'm very excited about the opportunity to come back to Cornell to coach the Big Red," Bilodeau said. "I had an incredible experience here as an undergraduate, and I'm passionate about what we have to offer at Cornell academically and athletically. Cornell has a long standing tradition of success in Women's Hockey, and I'm looking forward to helping the Big Red recapture championship form."

Travel Teams Formation/Tryouts

This is a summary of what you need to do in order to participate in this weekend's travel team formation/tryouts.  Refer to the Sept. 7 TGHA-All message for additional details.

Travel Team Formation Ice Sessions 2006

All tryouts are at The Rink in Lansing
Saturday, September 16
5:30-6:30 PM 16U
6:30-7:30 PM 14U

Sunday, September 17
11:30 AM -12:30 PM 12U
12:30-1:30 PM 14U
1:30-2:30 PM  16U

 3:30-4:30 PM 19U

Girls who wish to play on a team at an age group above their own age group must communicate in advance of tryouts with the coaches of both age groups in question.

Arrive early enough to sign in, complete forms, make your deposit payment, etc.

What you must bring to tryouts:

1. Girls who are transferring from other associations must present their 'release' before participating in TGHA sessions.

2. USAHockey 2006-07 Registration confirmation email with confirmation number and barcode (visit www.usahockey.com to register).  Print copy of the confirmation email and bring with you.

If you can't pre-register with USAH, bring a credit or debit card to tryouts and come early to register from Registrar Richard's computer at the RINK.  You must be 18 or bring someone 18 or older to register online with USAH. Come early if you need to do the USAH in person.

3. Payment for $100 to cover the 1) $20 tryout fee and 2 )$80 travel player fee deposit.
(For players who will request scholarship support, bring only the $20 for tryouts and talk with the Registrar about how to request a scholarship)

4. Completed TGHA Individual Membership Form  and TGHA Parent Code of Conduct form (see TGHA website for blank forms or open the attached zip file for blanks; extra copies will also be available at the RINK)

5. USAH Consent to Treat  and USAH Participant Code of Conduct
USAH does not allow us to place these forms on the web, but they are attached in this zip file.  There will be copies at tryouts for you to complete or you may request copies from Rich Goldstein rg225@cornell.edu.

A note on 06-07 fees:

The organization will keep fees as low as possible for participants.  Larger participant turnout will decrease fees.  Rather than establishing a fee before tryouts and risking over- (or under-) charging, we have provided an estimate of what a fee range most likely will be and are requiring a pre-tryout deposit toward the eventual total (see the 9/7 email or the TGHA web site for ranges).  Final fees will be communicated shortly after tryouts along with instructions on where and how to make the balance of your payment prior to the first pre-season ice session.  This is the first time we've handled fees in this manner, and we greatly appreciate your patience and support in testing this as a option for fee setting.

http://www.usahockey.com/Dear Friends,

It's an exciting time of the year as another hockey season is upon us.

You may be aware that USA Hockey is implementing a new Standard of Play and Rules Enforcement throughout the country in 2006-07.

While this new Standard of Play does not involve any rule changes, it does change the way our current rules will be called by referees in relation to hooking, holding, tripping and interference.

I strongly encourage you to visit our website usahockey.com and take the time to gather everyone in your family to watch the video presentation we've developed that explains what is and is not acceptable under the new Standard of Play. It's a terrific piece that will help everyone understand what to expect.

With the new standards, players will be rewarded offensively and defensively for their use of speed, skill, and strength.

Please help us in carrying the positive message forward. Together we will make our great game even better.

Best Wishes,

Ron DeGregorio, President USA Hockey

From SUNY Brockport about Former 19U Shooting Star:

Field Hockey Wins First of the Year
Allyson Granish scores game-winner in overtime

September 10, 2006

SALISBURY, MD - Freshman Allyson Granish ( Binghamton, NY/Harpursville) scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lead the SUNY Brockport Field Hockey team to a 2-1 victory over Denison College for the team’s first victory of the season.

The Golden Eagles (1-3) took a lead at the end of the first half as senior Gretchen Brehm (Rochester, NY/Irondequoit) took a pass from fellow senior Amy Anderson (Rochester, NY/Eastridge) and hit the back of the cage for the 1-0 lead.

Denison (1-4) tied the score with 20 minutes left in regulation but could not take a lead despite holding a sizable 13-5 shots advantage and a 20-2 advantage in penalty corners.

Brockport’s Andrea Vitello ( Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) continued her impressive play in goal and made eight saves. The senior forward was moved to goal at the start of the season and has averaged over 11 saves per game in the first four contests.

“We moved Andrea (Vitello) into the goal in preseason and she has been phenomenal,” said head coach Andrea Zurlo. “She is a very good athlete and has adjusted very well to her new role.”

Granish scored in overtime as she converted a pass from Amanda Pickard ( Depew, NY/Lancaster) picking up her first career goal.

Brockport plays its next game on the road with a 4 p.m. game Wednesday at Ithaca College before returning home for the SUNYAC opener against New Paltz at 1 p.m. Saturday.
