Help Needed for Learn to Play

On Saturday September 9, about 100 girls and boys are expected to participate in the first of six Learn to Play Hockey sessions that have been published in past TGHA-All newsletters.  They are on the ice from 11-12, and TGHA and IYHA as well as the Community Recreation Center staff will be greeting them, helping them with equipment, helping them on the ice, and answering questions from their parents.

We are seeking some girls and TGHA coaches to come on the ice as helpers and some adults to assist off ice.  On ice helpers need to wear a helmet, skates, and gloves and bring your stick.  Both on ice and off ice are encourage to wear TGHA or other girls hockey clothing to help identify yourself as a helper.  Come as early as
10 a.m. if you can.  There is also an optional  meeting Friday at 5:30 p.m. at The RINK for volunteers.

If you have questions, call Carol Mullins at 342-1475.  Volunteers are also needed for Tuesdays 6-7 (Sept. 12, 19 and 26) as well as Saturdays 11-12 (Sept. 16 and 23 as well as this week).  Send Carol an email if you can sign up to help any or all of those dates: cwestmullins@yahoo.com.

Registration Saturday

As published in recent TGHA Updates, Saturday September 9 at The RINK lobby is also Registration Day from
10:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. While this is geared to newcomers, continuing members are also very welcome to come and register.  Remember to register online with USA Hockey first (www.usahockey.com) and bring your printed confirmation. The process is very quick and easy so don't delay.  (If you do not have internet access, Registrar Richard Goldstein will have his computer there in order to help you with it; please bring your credit card as well as your checkbook.)

More Info Coming

Watch for another TGHA Update soon with more information about this season's programs!

Equipment to Donate? Return?

TGHA maintains a supply of used equipment to loan to our newest players each year to help them get started with playing ice hockey.  As we embark on a new season, please look in your closets and garages. Do you have used equipment that TGHA loaned you that you can now return for someone else to borrow?  Do you have your own equipment that now longer fits properly that you can donate for newcomers to borrow this year?  Either way, please contact Matt Ulinski at mu25@cornell.edu, 257-5600. You can also bring the equipment to The RINK this Saturday if you come to Registration.  Thanks!

Marketing Committee

You don't need an MBA or experience in advertising to join the TGHA Marketing Committee!  What you need is an understanding of how families in the
Ithaca area learn about opportunities for girls, and a willingness to tell others how great TGHA is!  Let Mary Grainger know you can help this fall and winter getting the message to others in our community. mmgithaca@aol.com, 257-3268

U22 USAH Team Plays Canada

When at the web site to register, scroll down and click the story about the U22 women's national festival and team. Kelly Blankenship was one of the younger girls on the team and she will be playing for the
University of Minnesota as she begins college this year.  Some in TGHA recall the Southeast Selects 12U team that flew into Ithaca and won the Silver Stick Tournament.  Kelly was one of the girls on that 12U team! Keep an eye on her!

Bredin Named Women's Hockey Assistant Coach
Former Cornell standout forward joins Engineers' staff

Colette Bredin

TROY, N.Y. - Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) director of athletics Ken Ralph has announced the hiring of Colette Bredin as women’s ice hockey assistant coach. A former standout at
Cornell University, she will aide fourth-year head coach John Burke.

“Colette is a quality individual who we are thrilled to have on staff,” said Burke. “She has a tremendous amount of experience and has enjoyed a great deal of success as a recruiter and as a coach on the ice.”

“I am very excited to be coming back to the ECAC,” said Bredin. “I’m looking forward to working with coach Burke, and the
Rensselaer student-athletes, to help bring the women’s ice hockey program into the national spotlight.”

A native of Warburg, Alb., Bredin spent the last four years as an assistant coach for the women’s hockey program at the
University of New Hampshire. During her tenure she helped guide the Wildcats to three straight regular season Hockey East titles as well as an appearance in each of the last three league tournament title games. In 2005-06, New Hampshire finished 33-3-1, and captured its third regular season title, the league tournament title, and appeared in the Women’s NCAA Frozen Four. In addition to her coaching duties, she taught a course within the school’s kinesiology department.

Prior to joining UNH, Bredin spent a year as an assistant coach at the
University of Findlay (2001-02).

As a player, Bredin played forward at Cornell, where she was named team’s Rookie of the Year in 1997 and served as an assistant captain during her final year. She was an All-ECAC selection in her sophomore season, leading the Big Red in goals (24), assists (12) and points (36). During that same year, she finished sixth in the ECAC in scoring. In 104 career games, Bredin, who was a nominee for the 2000 Hockey Humanitarian Award, recorded 56 goals and 40 assists for 96 points.

Following her college career, Bredin played for Reinach Women’s Hockey Club in
Switzerland, where she captured the league scoring title and led the team to the Swiss Championship. She has also represented Canada on the international stage, helping the 1996 Under 19 National Team to a silver medal.

An instructor at numerous hockey schools in the
United States and Canada, Bredin graduated from Cornell in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management and Marketing. She went on to earn her M.B.A. in Sport and Event Management from Findlay in 2002.
