President's Message:

Turning Time into Opportunities

Over the past three months, the TGHA Board has spent countless hours discussing

important issues for the upcoming TGHA ’05-’06 season.  Each issue brought before the Board is never taken lightly and is discussed thoroughly and at length.

Such a lengthy and thorough discussion to finalize the participation fees for TGHA took place two weeks ago during a meeting that lasted several hours.  At the heart of the discussion was the TGHA philosophy of providing as many choices to play hockey as possible and making hockey affordable to all girls in this community who have an interest in playing at whatever level it is they wish to play.  As simple as it would have been to have the players and, ultimately, the parents foot the bill for the entire TGHA Budget, doing so would not have been in the best interest of TGHA as it could exclude many families from participating.

With that in mind, we are keeping the fees for House and Initiation as low as possible ($200 and $150 respectively - with options for both) in hopes that this will encourage new faces to try hockey and keep current players in the game. With regard to the travel teams, (12U Travel-$825, 16U Travel-$875, 19U Travel-$975)  the TGHA Board agreed that imposing fees in excess of $1,000 would be a number that a few families just aren't willing to pay. Even though all travel team parents know that other costs occur during the season that add to the total cost, the up-front "sticker shock" is more palatable.

These fees multiplied by the projected number of players on the Travel, House and Initiation teams do not cover our proposed budget for the year. Therefore we are asking that everyone do their part to reach our fundraising goal of $13,000 (part of which will be a fundraising goal for each travel team).   This does not mean simply writing a check to make up the difference. We are asking you all for a comittment of time, creative energy and ideas to help close that gap between what TGHA wishes to provide and what fees can be charged.

Across the United States and throughout USA Hockey, this sport has become unaffordable for many kids and families. Unfortunately for many, hockey has taken on the "travel team" philosophy of playing as many games as possible, at the expense of those who just wish to provide their kids the opportunity to try, play and enjoy hockey on a recreational level at least at first. Then if the interest is there, for those who wish to be more competitive, hopefully there are organizations that provide competitive, yet not too cut-throat and expensive, opportunities to play hockey. TGHA has been such an organization since it's start in 1972. We on the TGHA Board wish to continue that philosophy this year and in years to come. We want to ensure that families in this community have the option to put their daughters on the ice, with stick in hand, for however long they wish without the concern of how much it costs.

I am confident that we can all pool our resources to ensure that girls hockey here in the Tompkins County communty can be enjoyed by all who wish to play and will remain a strong model for other organizations across the United States.

We'll see you on the ice and in the lobbies!

Carol Mullins

PS I hope you will contact me if you have questions or comments about the fee structure and the fundraising goals. Your ideas for fundraising projects can be given to me or to Judy Yonkin. Thank you for your interest and understanding.

Shooting Stars Invitational Tournament
(new name, same great tournament!!)

TGHA will hold it's annual Ithaca tournament on December 2, 3, and 4, 2005.  Not only is our tournament a weekend of great hockey and fun for the girls and their fans, it's an important fundraiser for TGHA.  All tournament proceeds are used to lower the cost of TGHA for girls from Initiation through 19U!

Please hold this weekend on your calendars.  Volunteers from all TGHA families are needed to make the tournament a success.

For those who have participated in the Ithaca "Silver Stick" tournament in the past, you'll notice that TGHA, after surveying participanting teams and assessing the costs and benefits of the Silver Stick affiliation, has decided to run an independent tournament.  Our top priority is to host a high quality, competitive, and fun tournament, and TGHA's reputation for
running such a tournament is already attracting lots of great teams for the games.

If you have questions about the tournament, talk with your coaches, the VPs Cathy Long and Matt Ulinski, or any member of the TGHA board.
