Free Learn to Play Hockey Scheduled at The RINK
IYHA/TGHA Registration Day Sept. 9
The Community Recreation Center (CRC), Ithaca Youth Hockey Association
(IYHA), and Tompkins Girls Hockey Association (TGHA) are sponsoring a free
"Learn to Play Hockey" program this fall at The RINK on
Girls and boys of preschool through elementary school age are invited to attend
one or more of the six ice sessions geared to first-time players. Qualified
coaches from TGHA and IYHA will instruct players through various skill-building
drills and fun games related to learning the basics of ice hockey.
Interested persons should pre-register by emailing
ithaca_learn_hockey@yahoo.com or calling Peter Dugan (IYHA) at 351-0108, or
Carol Mullins (TGHA) 342-1475.
All participants must have a hockey stick, a helmet with a hockey face guard,
gloves, pants and elbow pads. Shin pads are also recommended. Some
of the younger players will be able to use thick snow pants or ski gloves in
place of hockey gear. Properly fitted bike elbow pads may also be used in
place of hockey elbow pads. There will be some loaner equipment available
at the ice sessions including hockey skates. CRC and The RINK are offering free
rentals and fitting for the participants.
Equipment can be obtained from Instant Replay Sports or Penalty Box Sports who
have a limited supply of used hockey gear as well as new for purchase. If
you are having problems finding gear, please contact Steve Vrana at 277-6008. IYHA and TGHA have some gear for loan,
but we encourage you to reserve it before the first session on September 9.
TGHA and IYHA are also registering new members for their programs which begin
with Initiation once or twice a week during the October-March hockey
season. Their websites include program descriptions and schedules:
www.ithacagirlshockey.com and www.ithacayouthockey.com. New players can
sign up throughout the fall or at Registration Day, Saturday, September 9 from

How to Register for
TGHA Registrar Richard Goldstein announced earlier this summer that
registration for USA Hockey is now online. It costs $33 paid to USAH not
to TGHA as it was in the past, and should be done prior to the first time
returning players and coaches are on the ice for the season, and when
newcomers join. For people without internet access Richard will assist on his
computer at tryouts or Open House or other registration events, or by other
arrangement with him. See USA Hockey website for details and
instructions: www.usahockey.com.
The receipt needs to be printed out and brought when registering in person or
mailed to the TGHA PO box. The TGHA registration forms can be obtained at the
various registration events or downloaded from the TGHA web site: www.ithacagirlshockey.com.
Two forms are needed at the start of the season: TGHA membership form and the
Code of Conduct.
Notes:
Girls born during or after 2000 are not changed a USAH fee.
Coaches are reimbursed by TGHA for their USAH registration (and for training
expenses).
The USAH process uses a credit/debit card; contact Richard if another payment
format is needed.
Girls who are under age 18 cannot complete the online process without an
adult's assistance since the process includes 'signing' the USAH liability
waiver.
The USA Hockey season date remains September 1 through August 31 of each year.
When to register?

At Sept. 16 and 17 ice sessions
