'Turn Beauty Inside Out' Event on Saturday May 8
All Area Middle and High School Girls Invited to Free Leadership
Rally
On Saturday May 8, middle and high school girls can
participate in the first local Turn Beauty Inside Out (TBIO) event
which will feature woman leaders Carolyn Peterson, Leslyn McBean,
Kathy Luz Herrera, Robin Korherr, Sandra Gittleman, Cathy
Valentino, Nancy Schuler, and Pamela Mackesey. The TBIO Leadership
Conference which is free and doesn't require advance registration
will include an interactive and multimedia session on media
literacy with Cyndy Scheibe of Ithaca College. McBean will give
the keynote speech at the event's start. It will run from
1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Tompkins County Human Services Building, 320
W. State Street, Ithaca.
TBIO is a national ongoing campaign to redefine beauty. Beauty
does not have to be determined by the physical features that we
inherit according to Caren Cooper, event chair. Beauty can be
about the quality of our character, the force of our actions, and
our ability to care enough about the world to work to transform
it. For example, this year's national theme TBIO-Women in
Politics" reflects that leadership is beautiful.
With the help of Ithaca College's Project Look Sharp, GirlsmArts,
Mind on the Media and AAUW (American Association of University
Women), girls at the TBIO Leadership Conference will be able to
participate in some empowering and important activities in order
to Turn Beauty Inside Out in Ithaca, in their schools, and for
their peers. Girls will learn that careers in politics are within
their reach and that participation in our democracy will soon
become not just their right, but an empowering process and
responsibility. They will interact with each other and with Ithaca
College students and with the local woman politicians who will be
joining them for the afternoon event.
Spread the word to each young woman you know and encourage her to
attend TBIO on May 8. Don't miss it! If you have questions,
contact Caren Cooper <cbc25@cornell.edu>, 257-4231.
