Chicago Showcase
In the three years since a girls division has been added to the Chicago Showcase hockey tournament each April, there has been an Ithaca presence.  This year we were represented by 19U player Janie Byrd, a member of the New York team, 16U coach Kelly Pike who was the assistant coach for the team from the Southeast US district, and 19U coach Carol Mullins who was part of the referee corps.  According to the Showcase web site, Carol received the Chet Stewart Referee Award, and Randi Griffin of Kelly's team received the Joe Benedetto MVP Award.  In addition, former Shooting Stars Olivia Coffey of Watkins Glen and Meghan Marchetti of Cortland were member of the New York team.

Four Shooting Stars '04 to College Hockey
Tompkins Girls Hockey Association is pleased to announce that four of this year's 19U Shooting Stars team, Christina Siliciano, Janie Byrd, Jesse Baker, and Sarah Trager, will join the growing ranks of local women players in college hockey.

Christina Siliciano, a center, will be attending Harvard University where she recently had an official NCAA visit with the D1 ECAC women's ice hockey program. Captain of both the Ithaca 19Us and the Ithaca High girls varsity hockey team, she is also a top student at Ithaca High.

Janie Byrd of Auburn played defense for the Shooting Stars, and Jesse Baker of Ithaca played offense for Ithaca High and the 19Us.?nbsp; They will both attend Cortland State joining head coach and Ithaca native Kim Hokanson as part of the Red Dragons D-III ECAC West program.

Sarah Trager of Liverpool who split time at forward and defense for Ithaca, has elected to attend Neumann College in Philadelphia. Neumann competes in the same division as Cortland.

Siliciano won't be the only person in her household playing college hockey next season. Her sister, Anna, plays for D-III Wesleyan, and was that team's leading scorer this past season.

This past season ten local women athletes competed in NCAA hockey. In addition to Anna Siliciano, they included Frances Jacobus Parker (Wesleyan), Sarah Baldwin (Hamilton), Elizabeth Yale-Loehr (Middlebury), Kaley Ostanek (RIT),?nbsp; Barbara McElwee?nbsp; (RIT), Jamie Jensen (Vermont), Christina Valesente (Clarkson), Mary Kate Wheeler (Bowdoin) and Jennifer Downey (Buffalo State).

Next Season
During the April 7 TGHA board meeting the preliminary plans to offer four travel teams was discussed in addition to Initiation, House and Recreation.  12U and 14U will play in the NYSAHA Central Section Tier 2 divisions where they have many nearby competitive opponents. 16U and 19U do not have as many local teams to play so in travelling further find the NYSAHA Tier 1 designation may work best for both the local girls who play on the teams and those from other communities who travel to Ithaca to participate in the Shooting Stars program.

Next Board Meeting
Wed. May 12 at 7:00 p.m. at Kim Hamel's new home, Directions and Agenda will be announced closer to the meeting date.

'Turn Beauty Inside Out' Event on Saturday May 8
All Area Middle and High School Girls Invited to Free Leadership Conference

Turn Beauty Inside Out (TBIO) is a national ongoing campaign to redefine beauty.?nbsp; Beauty does not have to be determined by the physical features that we inherit.?nbsp; Beauty can be about the quality of our character, the force of our actions, and our ability to care enough about the world to work to transform it.?nbsp; For example, this year's national theme TBIO-Women in Politics" reflects that leadership is beautiful.

On Saturday, May 8 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. at the Tompkins County Human Services Building (320 West State Street, Ithaca), all area girls in middle and high school are invited to the Turn Beauty Inside Out Leadership Conference.?nbsp; At this free event, girls will have a chance to talk with many of our local female elected officials.?nbsp; Can you guess which one started her political career with running for student government in 7th grade??nbsp;

With the help of Project Look Sharp, GirlsmArts, Mind on the Media and AAUW (American Association of University Women), girls at the TBIO Leadership Conference will be able to participate in some empowering and important activities in order to Turn Beauty Inside Out in Ithaca, in their schools, and for their peers.?nbsp; Girls will learn that careers in politics are within their reach and that participation in our democracy will soon become not just their right, but an empowering process and responsibility.

Spread the word to each young woman you know and encourage her to attend TBIO on May 8.?nbsp; Don't miss it!?nbsp; If you have questions, contact Caren Cooper <cbc25@cornell.edu>, 257-4231.

Dear Community Member,

The Ithaca Youth Bureau, with the help of graduate students at Cornell University's Johnson School, has recently undertaken an effort to improve its marketing to the broader Ithaca community.?nbsp; As a precursor to this effort, the Ithaca Youth Bureau is trying to gain a better understanding as to how members of the community view the Ithaca Youth Bureau and its current marketing efforts.

Given this, I am contacting you on behalf of the Ithaca Youth Bureau to ask if you would consider helping our effort by completing our marketing survey.?nbsp; This should take no more than ten minutes of your time, yet your input will greatly aid us in determining how to best move forward.?nbsp; If you choose to complete the survey, you can find it at:

http://atcdb.cit.cornell.edu/survey//wsb.dll/mro6/IYB.htm

Please feel free to skip any question you don't care to answer. As an incentive, we will be giving away five one-day admission tickets to Cass Park Pool for the 2004 swim season.?nbsp; The email addresses of the five winners will be randomly drawn from the list of survey participants, and we will contact them accordingly.

Thank you for your consideration, and have a great spring!

Sincerely
Karen Friedeborn
