On Saturday March 19, middle school girls from throughout the
Ithaca region are invited to participate in "sister2sister2005".?nbsp;
This is the fifth annual event and each has brought about 70 girls
to the Women's Community Building in downtown Ithaca for a day of
special activities designed for them.?nbsp;
Girls and parents who want to inquire about the program and
registration can check with their school guidance office.?
Information is also available at the Women's Community Building,
on the web site <www.lightlink.com/womens/> or by calling
280-4380 or emailing s2sithaca@yahoo.com.?nbsp;
Registration and a $5.00 fee is encouraged. ?nbsp; Fee waivers can
be requested on the forms.?nbsp; Girls may continue to register
through the days before the event, and at the door at 9:00 a.m.
Girls who participated in the past events reported that they had a
lot of fun while they were doing the interesting and inspirational
activities.?nbsp; This year's sister2sister theme is "Crossing
the Cafeteria: Fitting In and Being Yourself".?nbsp; It will
run from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. There will be a chance to be in a
small group as well as to participate in large group activities.
High school age trained mentors will guide the middle
school girls in the small group activities.
The morning will begin with a panel of three speakers from the
community: Leslyn McBean-Clairborne, Maureen Kelly and
Marjolein CH van der Meulen. Girls will meet their high school
mentors and begin rotating among activity stations including
martial arts, bracelets, and stress reduction techniques. During
the pizza lunch break, the "Love Your Self Fair" will
occur. It will feature such things as hair braiding, massage,
face-painting and information on healthy lifestyles.
The afternoon will begin with everyone viewing a skit called
"Crossing the Cafeteria". Erica Steinhagen will direct a
group of local teen girls.?nbsp; In their small groups girls will
develop their own endings for the skit.?nbsp; A closing activity
will end the day.
The American Association of University Women in conjunction with
numerous community organizations sponsors this program which will
feature "enjoyment, education and empowerment" for local
adolescent girls. Other partners include the Women's Community
Building, Family and Children's Service, Multicultural Resource
Center, Planned Parenthood of the Southern Finger Lakes, Ithaca
College Sociology, Cornell Family Life Development Center,

Counseling, and One to One Big Brothers Big Sisters.
Adults can also contact the sister2sister organizing committee to
volunteer to be involved or to offer financial support of the
program.?nbsp; A free morning workshop for adults (parents,
teachers, counselors, friends) will also be offered with Amanda
Verba, Youth Development Coordinator at BOCES. No registration
is needed for this component which begins at 10:15 a.m. after the
opening panel.
