Ithaca Celebrates National Girls and Women in Sports Day
2004 Feb. 7
“Play Fair” is the theme for the 18th Annual National
Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) to be held on February 4,
2004 across the country. This Day was chartered by the U.S.
Congress in 1986 to honor female athletic achievement and
recognize the importance of sports and fitness participation for
all girls and women. Information is available on the web site:
Ithaca College will host a local NGWSD celebration for girls ages
8-12 on Saturday February 7 starting at 12:30 p.m. at the Ben
Light Gymnasium.?nbsp; Admission is free and open to the
public.?nbsp; Girls will rotate among four activity stations
before the 2:00 p.m. Ithaca College women's basketball game vs.
Nazereth College. They will receive "activity passports" upon
registration for the pregame stations (obstacle course, basketball
skills challenge, "team building" activity, and sign making/face
painting)?nbsp; There will also be halftime activities (Dribble
Tag, P.I.G. and Around the World each led by other Ithaca varsity
women's sports teams) and an autograph session with the IC
basketball team at the game's conclusion. No advance registration
is necessary.?nbsp; Questions can be directed to the IC Athletics
Department, 274-3793, ahink@ ithaca.edu.

NGWSD is celebrated in all 50 states, with community-based events,
award ceremonies and other activities honoring the achievements of
girls and women in sports. Several states have statewide dinners
to recognize accomplished athletes, coaches and contributors to
women’s sports. Other states organize meetings between women’s
sports leaders and state legislators to discuss current
legislation relating to women in sports. NGWSD is sponsored by
five prominent national organizations: Girls Incorporated, Girl
Scouts of the USA, National Association for Girls and Women in
Sport, Women’s Sports Foundation, and the YWCA of the U.S.A.
