Megan Shull, one of our illustrious
alumni and inspiring coaches, introduces her first fiction book
for girls about a six grade girl who plays hockey this weekend at
two events in the Chicago area with one of her heroes, Cammi
Granato! Below I have included an excerpt of an announcement I
received about it from a national hockey email list. Other
details about the book and an event at American Girl Place on
Saturday can be found at
www.americangirl.com (go
to American Girl Place-Chicago-Events for the links including a
glimpse of the book cover featuring some faces and uniforms you'll
recognize!). Megan assures me there will be a book signing event
with THE author this fall!

MEGAN SHULL BIO -
Megan Shull, author of Yours Truly, Skye O'Shea and Skye's the
Limit!
from American Girl, first thought of her sassy, adventurous title
character while hiking up a steep canyon on a bright fall day. She
had a
sense that Skye's spirit was something special, so before she took
another step, she sat down beside a stream, fished out a pen and a
crinkled receipt from her jeans pocket, and started writing. Since
that
day, Shull never goes on hikes without a pen and a piece of paper.
"You
never know when inspiration will hit," she says, adding she finds
tranquility and inspiration in the gorges, waterfalls, and lakes
surrounding her hometown of Ithaca, New York.
Even though Shull's books are fiction, the emotions she writes
about
come straight from the heart. "People often ask me where I get
ideas for
my books. I try to write from those feelings we've all had," she
says.
"Love, fear, wanting to be liked, feelings of intense
disappointment or
joy, it doesn't matter if you are 11 or 33, those emotions are
universal. We've all been there."
If you think Megan Shull sounds a little bit like a psychologist,
you're
right. Besides being a writer, Shull holds a doctorate in
Educational
Psychology from Cornell University, where she also received her
undergraduate degree. At Cornell, Shull's research focused on how
to
help girls negotiate adolescence, which she thinks is no easy task
these
days. "Today's MTV-crazed culture is tough on girls. They're up
against
unrealistic images of what it's like to be a woman, a gratuitous
disregard for civility, and an enormous pressure to just be
perfect. On
top of all that, all too often kids don't have the luxury these
days to
just be kids." Indeed, girls everywhere may agree with Shull when
she
adds, "Plus I think schools give way too much homework!"
A former collegiate ice hockey player and youth hockey coach,
Shull once
biked 4,000 miles from Portland, Oregon, to New York City. She
loves
reading stories of real life adventure, and on warm summer days
can be
seen paddling her canoe on the lake by her home. Shull encourages
girls
everywhere to follow their dreams. She thinks Glenda, the good
witch
from The Wizard of Oz, says it best: "You've always had it in you,
my
dear, you've always had the power." "That is one of life's big
secrets,"
Shull says with a grin, "You will never know until you try."
